APRIL

April 8

The Baby-Animal Festival at Cross E Ranch did not disappoint last year, so we just had to go again. This time we invited our friends Johnny and Tessa Murdock and Johnny took so many photos of us. He and his wife are in the Videography and Photography business. So he just takes tons of pictures and I like to take pictures, so between the 2 of us I have far too many pictures to prove how much fun we had at the Baby- Animal Festival.

The main highlight of our visit was feeding the baby goats. I got to feed the runt. She was so cute.

Gosh then we were able to play with them for awhile. The kids were laughing so much at the baby kids trying to jump on their backs.

The bunnies were also very adorable.
 And so were the chicks...
 More goat planking.

And feeding...

We had the time of our lives.

This is Tessa. Johnny's wife. She too has become a really good friend.
Bean pits for the kids to dig in.

April 12-
With Academy a month away from finishing. We took on remodeling the rental bathroom in our basement. My sister moved out the first on March and we were having new renters moving in the first of May. And that bathroom was just the worst.

Here are the before pictures of it....

And we tore out the shower and the tole floor to bring it up to date.

To count a date night in we went to Lowes until they closed and then went home to work on it together. I scraped the floor of it extra grout/cement. A week prior to this I had started tearing out the tile in the shower. I have the best video of Fynn helping me tear things down. He loves to work. Especially construction stuff.
 Jesse started mudding the bathroom...
and he also cut the tub and shower panel inserts installed. The shower was just so gross so we thought a tub would be much better for the rental. Cleaner and family friendly!
April 13- CYRUS' BAPTISM DAY!!!

Mosiah 18 " As ye are desirous to ... bear one another's burdens,... and comfort those that stand in need of comfort... if this be the desire of your hearts, what have you against being baptized in the name of the Lord?"

Oh what a special day!
My heart was so full of love that day. There's something incredible around the experience of your own offspring entering into the waters of baptism.

There's something special about hearing your husband give the most heartfelt and spiritually in-tune confirmation and blessing to our 2nd son.

There was a love on that day that was very special. The Holy Ghost bears a witness of it.

There is something so sweet about these 3 boys loving on each other that day.

Grandparents coming to support!

After the baptism we went into the room where Jesse would perform the confirmation. I remember the Spirit being so sweet and tender. I've since then asked Cyrus about his favorite part of his Baptism Day, and besides the party we had after, he said that he was felt the Spirit when he was receiving the Holy Ghost. He said it felt warm.

The Bishop asked me to share my testimony and I bawled my eyes out.  Ugh. Not spiritual tender  bawl my eyes out.. No... it was ugly cry my eyes out. Hopefully it wasn't as embarrassing as it felt. lol

We decided to have the dinner party at the church since our house at the time (and still) is under construction. While we were eating dinner, most of the kids were running around in the gym having a good time. Cyrus came back into the room with his hand covering his forehead and he said so calmly to me "Mom my head hurts" and then uncovered his head. I (and 2 other moms beside me) gasped. He was so calm and the size of the goose egg just revealed  shocked me.  I then realized I didn't want to freak him out by my instant reaction to it. I tried to remain calm and within seconds we had a glove full of ice and had it on his forehead.
The poor thing. On his baptism day he got knocked on the head pretty well. We were all a little concerns about him having a concussion the way his calm demeanor about it was. Ryker came into the room and explained that the kids were all running around in the gym with the lights out and Ryker's foot came in contact with Cyrus' forehead. A total  unfortunate accident.
Gosh I just felt so bad for him.
He eventually perked up and was doing great. Sporting his new gash on his forehead and all.
A client of mine put together this Balloon Arch for me. It's nice to have clients that I can pull out some trades.
The party was a success. I do remember not as many people could stay for the food, so we had far beyond our means. But that's ok because I sent home several left overs to just about everyone that was there.
April 18

Traditional Easter Egg Dying!

Always left with dyed hands as well. lol

 So pretty!
April 20- Spring Soccer Season Started!
 April 21- EASTER

Probably one of my favorite Holidays!
What I wrote on that day...
"This Easter has felt much holier to me. I have studied and read the Holy week everyday this week. Really thinking about what went on and what it would have been like being there. What did it feel like to see Jesus riding on a donkey into Jerusalem?
How was it that Christ really took upon him all the sins of the world?
How might Pilate really have felt trying to tell the people that Jesus was innocent?
What about Simon carrying the cross for Jesus?
If it weren't for Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus, Christ wouldn't have had a proper burial.
How might Mary of Magdalene feel being the first one to see the resurrected Lord?
What did the 2 disciples on the road to Emmaus feel after spending time, talking and eating with the resurrected Savior?
And Thomas? Waiting 8 days after the other disciples had seen Christ again to finally see and touch His resurrected body?
I have felt a bigger sense of LOVE for my Savior from imagining and realizing what it could have been like to be there. I have been overcome by the spirit and have wept a couple of times this week from the spirit testifying to me of the truths from the scripture acounts.

We also did something kinda crazy. We bought chicks! I had a scavenger hunt all put together and their end prize they walked into the basement and found these chicks just a chirping away. Oh man were they just so excited.
Just look at these faces. They tell it all.

How did I get so blessed with these 4 boys?

in my thought I wrote: "I look at these 3 boys and feel even more love and gratitude for my Savior. Because of Him I have such a peace about His plan I wept during Sacrament Meetting as we sang "I know that my Redeemer Lives" because I really feel that it is true! He LIVES!!!"

That night we invited Mike and Heidi over for an Easter Dinner and then made Resurection Rolls with the boys! They had a blast!

April 27- Spring Flag Football Season started
April 28-
I took these pictures this day because Fynn finally decided that wearing a tie was okay!
And he's just down right adorable!

And I'm not sure what Ryker is doing in this picture, but they sure were treating those new chicks as little pets.
A continuation on the basement. The whole downstairs also really needed painting. And we were just a week or so from our new renters moving in. We painted the ceiling, walls and baseboards. We spent many hours down there jammin' to Backstreet Boys. And somehow amidst Jesse's academy we were able to get it done. The downstairs looked so good that they upstairs got neglected. lol

MARCH

March 2

For Cy's Birthday Date night he wanted to go with Mom and Dad. We went to Blaze Pizza and saw a movie. Which I'm pretty sure he wanted to go see the same movie that Ryker saw for his birthday the month before. Jesse hadn't seen it, so we went. I remember falling asleep during the movie. Dang it. That was an expensive nap. lol.
March 3
WOW! 8 YEARS OLD! Oh this sweet boy! It's weird having your second child getting older because they always seem young in comparison to the oldest. So it kinda snuck up on me because over night he sees so big to me.

How could I describe Cy? Sweet and Sour maybe? lol
He genuinely has the most tender loving soul with the flip side of mischief and trouble in there. I've seen him write "I love you" on the family whiteboard to each of us. And also pester Ryker until he's in tears all the while Cyrus has a little smirky grin on his face.
Sweet and Sour!
We love him in our family.
Cyrus we love your sweet smile and YOU!!!

 March 7

Another example of Fynnie's Cuteness

March 9- Get Air Birthday Party

To celebrate Cy turning 8, we gathered a few of his friends and took them to GET AIR!
(Back row: Sterling Smith, Lexi Stepen, Ryker, Treven Wesche,  James B, Sadie Noall
Front row: Sam Reynolds, Fynnie, CYRUS, Trey Heath, Kamden Wersland)
After the kids jumped around for awhile, I fed them some spaghetti. Cy's favorite!

Then we sang to Cy!
 March 10
My family had a birthday party for Cy and he got a Hoverbaord as well. I remember Cy being so ecited, but man on man Ryker was so upset that Cy got one too. He wanted to be unique. Or something like that. It reminded me of being a kid and the werid feelings you get from your siblings. Cy wants to be like Ryker, and Ryker likes it but also wants his own stuff. They were fighting over Ryker's hoverboard all the time. Cy would beg to ride it and even would do all the silly little chores that Ryker would make him do to earn "ride time".
I was happy to see that they could both have one and play together. Ryker eventually got over it and they now play together just fine.
 March 15
My parents gave us all day passes to Boondocks. And we cashed them in on that day. I remember that week being absolutely draining. I was so stressed out and emotionally drained from family drama on my side of the family. (Which looking back on now was the start of a long division in the family that is still going on. I can't explain it on here, but things with me and my family just aren't the same anymore).

It's amazing how time with these boys makes all the crazy around me disappear for that moment.
I mean those smiles on those faces are pure joy!

And I might have gotten a little bit a pleasure kicking their butts in bowling..
 ... and lasor tag.
And believe it or not, the bumper boats were open in March. It was slightly chilly, but still fun!

March 16- Paint Night Date Night
During Jesse's 15 week Academy our date nights kinda disappeared. The amount of stress it put on him had also added to my plate as well. At this point we were 7 weeks done and were in complete survival mode. We would help each other out when and where ever we could. I tried to listen to Jesse when he would come home from training. He would tell me about certain captain's that just didn't seem to like him. How hard they would push them during a workout and then have to go run drills in their full turnout gear. Hear him complain about his injured shoulder from how hard he got pushed. Try to help him study at night, make his lunch every morning. Occasionally dropping off his lunch him because he forgot it that morning.

What I found so hard during all of that was trying to put my needs as a wife on the back burner. It was totally fine at the beginning. And my head knew why it was the way it was. It was only temporary. But I found my heart having the hardest time understanding what my brain knew. I couldn't burden my sorrows and worries on him while he was going through so much. So thank goodness for my friend Jenny. She got to hear all my stressful moments. She got me through Academy with Jesse.

One night I noticed Jesse scheduling a Paint Night date night for us and I was so tickled that he was trying to plan a date night in the middle of our crazy.

We have never done paint night before and it was totally AWESOME! I loved getting to spend time with him. JUST HIM. Laughing and enjoying just being together. Paint night is something that we have always wanted to do and it was so much fun.

I loved how they turned out. Both the same, but yet so uniquely different.
 March 27
I recorded on my Instagram the following...

"A few weeks ago Ryker was asking me about the Second Coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. I told him he could find the answers to alot of his questions in the Topical Guide. So he's been doing his own personal scripture study from 'Jesus Christ, Second Coming of' in the Topical Guide. Seeing him studying this morning in the car ride to school was just a little mind blowing to me. He's doing this all his own, wherever and whenever he can. I love seeing his excitement to learn about the Gospel."

I gave a talk in Sacrament on March 24 and I want to put it in here because I shared some great family stories and testimony about the new Come Follow Me Program.

Experiences from the “Come Follow Me” Program

About two-and-a-half years ago I received a very strong prompting that our family should begin a daily habit of reading the scriptures together. At that time, my oldest son, Ryker was in 3rd grade. My middle son, Cyrus was starting Kindergarten and didn’t know how to read yet. And my baby, Fynn was just one year old.
I told my husband, Jesse about my nudging I had received from the Spirit to do this, but he didn’t feel that we were in the right season of our lives to begin. At this time, he felt burdened at work with his long hours and crazy schedule as a firefighter, he thought the boys were too young to understand, and he didn’t feel like he could commit to doing one more thing at this point.
Despite these obstacles, I felt compelled to follow through on the personal revelation I had received to begin gospel study with my family.  So, I and my boys began reading each day.  I decided that if I wanted to establish a habit of this it would have to become a routine thing. Same time every day. Mornings seemed daunting, but the evenings were always so busy and I’m usually depleted by that time, so I settled on in the morning before school.  Well in the beginning it was a struggle to establish the habit. Waking the boys up 30 minutes earlier for school wasn’t easy.  Not every morning was pretty either. But we learned that generally the mornings that we read from the Book of Mormon made for a better day. We eventually figured out that after everyone was dressed and fed, it worked the best.
I confess that there were some mornings that felt like it was such a fight to get it done, others we maybe got 5 minutes in. Scripture Study with 3 active, rambunctious boys didn’t always produce high levels of edification……. but what I can say is that we stayed consistent in our effort.
It took us 2 school years to read the Book of Mormon. And I will never forget the morning that we finished.  We had 2 chapters left and as we read them the spirit that was present was so tender, so powerful and SO REAL! The tears came and they didn’t stop. The boys could feel it too and the tears flowed down their faces as well. The power in that book is REAL! We know it’s true! We even took on Moroni’s challenge in Moroni 10:4 to ‘…ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.”
Ryker offered this prayer that morning and as he prayed my heart felt as if it were going to burst. I was so amazed at the words that he uttered to his Father in Heaven asking Him to testify to us that the Book of Mormon was true. My heart was so filled with love. Love for my 3 boys. Love for my Eternal Father. Love for our Savior, Jesus Christ. Love for the testimony and knowledge we gained from the Book of Mormon. And love from the Holy Ghost testifying to our hearts of the truth of that book!
In that moment, all the rough mornings were WORTH IT!!!
After we finished the Book of Mormon, we were eager to start on something new and began on President Nelson’s challenge to read every reference about Christ in the Topical Guide. Each taking a turn reading a reference. This has been very exciting for us.
Along the way, my boys have become very good readers. They have learned where to find the references to Christ in the different books of scripture. They are beginning to understand the language of the scriptures. My oldest son, Ryker, now a 5th grader, isn’t afraid to be a light on a hill that cannot be hid and shares his testimony regularly. My second son, Cyrus now a 2nd grader participates fully in family scripture study and genuinely loves looking up the references about Christ, while the 3 year old, Fynn wanders around and does his own thing, weaving in and out of discussion.
Now that the Come Follow Me program has been introduced, Jesse has taken the lead. We study the curriculum before church meetings on Sunday and on Monday night for Family Home Evening. The very first Sunday of the year, Jesse took the lead with the discussion. We were all gathered around our kitchen table all dressed for church and I sat back watching and a feeling of awe came over me. The boys were all very comfortable with this scenario. Sitting around the kitchen table for scripture study was normal for them.  As my husband bore his tender testimony to our boys the spirit confirmed to me that this scenario would not have happened if I had not followed the prompting I had received two-and-a-half years prior. I feel so grateful that I followed through with that one prompting.
What experience set us up to embrace the Come Follow Me Program.
Let me use another story to illustrate and I’d like you to listen with your spiritual ears.
Last week, Jesse and I went to a Paint Night for our date. When we arrived we found empty seats with a canvas, paint brushes and paint ready for each of us. There were about 25 people there and one instructor. Before we started, the Instructor/Artist made us all say out-loud that we weren’t allowed to say anything like… “Oh I messed up” or “My neighbor’s looks better than mine” or “I like theirs better.” She told us that even though we were all there to paint the same image each person’s painting would come out looking different. We all vowed that we would have fun and be the best version of ourselves.
Step by step we were given pretty simple instruction.  Some of the steps felt easy and flawless.  Some of the steps felt maybe a little awkward, hard and maybe a little frustrating. I wondered how these little brush strokes could turn out looking like foliage or water. Each brush stroke in isolation didn’t look very interesting or impressive. In fact, if I stood close to the canvas, all I could see was a mass of unrelated variations of blue strokes.
As we continued to work on our paintings I had moments of “I’m not sure I know what I’m doing” or “I hope this turns out OK” and a few “Oh I like that, I’m proud of how that looks”.
When we finished and I could step back and see all the individual brushstrokes combine together and produced a scene of a peaceful moonlit lake.  Many ordinary, individual brushstrokes working together to create a captivating and if I do say so myself,…(show painting)….. a beautiful painting.

When I step back and look on the past 2.5 years establishing a scripture study habit with my boys in my mind it is an overall beautiful scene. It didn’t matter that not every day went as planned or that we had some mishaps and mistakes throughout. Or as Bob Ross would say…” There are no mistakes, only happy accidents.”
But what mattered was that we were CONSISTENT!!!!
Each time we prayed, and each episode of scripture study was a brush stroke on the canvas of our souls.
Elder Bednar stated… “No one event may appear to be very impressive or memorable. But just as the different shades of [blue] and [white] strokes of paint complement each other and produce an impressive masterpiece, so our consistency in doing seemingly small things can lead to significant spiritual results.” (“More Diligent and Concerned at Home”, Oct 2009 Gen. Conf.)
When we started implementing the Come Follow Me Curriculum in our family, I felt confident going into it because I could draw from our scripture study experience and it helped me know that if we stayed consistent with it, we would slowly create something wonderful.
 I also find comfort from the blessings promised from our beloved Prophet to those families who embrace the Come Follow Me program;
“Homes transformed into sanctuaries of faith.”
“The power of families unleashed’”
“Sabbath Days will truly be a delight.”
“The influence of the adversary in our lives and homes will DECREASE.”
“The children will be excited to learn and live the Savior’s teachings.”
This week for Family Night we were discussing why the Savior taught in parables. We then discussed the Parable of the Wheat and the Tares. I had the boys read the Parable first and then we broke down the Spiritual Side of it. And I’ll be honest going into this I was a little worried they were going to be bored. But to my surprise they were completely engaged and loving unfolding the meaning behind the parable. They were even putting the pieces together before I even told them what each thing represented. I saw them connecting the dots and the excitement in their eyes as they were learning with their spiritual ears was powerful. I can see the prophets promise unfolding.
This week I also asked my family what their impressions have been from implementing Come Follow Me into our home. Or maybe what their favorite part about it was? Or their favorite story?
Jesse said that he is enjoying the time we are making to talk about the Gospel with each other. He said it is an inspired program because it has felt natural and just makes sense.
Ryker said he loved learning about the original 12 apostles and how we have 12 modern-day apostles. He loved seeing the picture of the modern-day apostles all together in Rome standing in front of the Christus and 12 Apostles Statues. It’s made him feel happy and he likes going to church prepared to discuss the week’s topic.
Cyrus said he loves when we dress up and act out some of the stories. He loves the “Spiritual Smoothies” that we have during our lessons. He admitted that is makes him happy and sometimes mad. And his favorite story was when Christ cast out the legion of devils into the 20,000 pigs and they ran off the cliff.
When I asked Fynn what he liked about the Come Follow Me program that we had been doing in our family I was shocked to get a related answer from him. He said, “I like we sing”.
I was a little surprised that no one mentioned anything about the Family Night Lesson where we learned about John-the Baptist eating locus and honey.  And I gave each of them dried crickets as their family night treat.

Now, going back to my paint night story, did you listen with your spiritual ears? I gave you a modern-day Come Follow Me Parable. We can call it the Parable of the Paint Night.
The instructor is like the Savior. He is giving us step by step instructions. Even weekly instructions with the Come Follow Me Curriculum. Some weeks we will think “I’m not sure I know what I’m doing” or “I hope this turns out OK” and a few “Oh I like that, I’m proud of how that lesson or discussion went”. We are all going to have “painting moments” that feel amazing and others not so sure if it’s even worth trying. We have to remember that… “No one event may appear to be very impressive or memorable. But just as the different shades of [blue] and [white] strokes of paint complement each other and produce an impressive masterpiece, so our consistency in doing seemingly small things can lead to significant spiritual results.”
Like the instructor, our Savior doesn’t want us to compare our “paintings” to each other’s. The beauty of the Come Follow Me program is that we are all studying the same curriculum and yet each family, each person, each “Painting” is uniquely beautiful.
It’s supposed to look different for each of us. As I thought about that. Each of us having a unique painting of our lives. I envisioned an overall painting as a ward and as a church. Envision each family in our unique efforts as a single brush stroke on the ward and church painting. Individual brushstrokes combining together to produce a Heavenly scene working together to create something captivating, holy and GLORIOUS!
I testify that if we stay CONSISTENT, DILIGENT and CREATE OPPORTUNITIES TO FEEL THE SPIRIT, God will fulfill his promises and begin to “work miracles in us and in our lives.”
“As disciples of the Savior, we are not merely striving to know more; rather, we need to consistently do more of what we know is right and become better.”
Truly, “the Lord likes effort, and He blesses our best efforts.”

I testify that the Come Follow Me Program is truly inspired and comes from God. Its already changed my family and I thank Heavenly Father every night for blessing me to be a mother in this time of the Church. And for the blessing of raising 3 active, rambunctious boys with this Program.
I say these things in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,
Amen.

The rest of FEBURARY

OK here we go. Month by Month!

Feb 8

Ryker's 11 Birthday was kickstarted by a stack of pancakes. I remember not being able to find the candles so I improvised with tea lights.

11 years old! My goodness. And where to begin with the love I have for this boy? He is such a light in my life. For example, the week before his before I was feeling overwhelmed with what I needed to get done in that particular day. I found a note on my mirror that was encouraging me that I could do it. He reminded me that he loves me and that God loves me. His spirit is a strong one and I believe God has big things in store for him. I love him to the heavens and back.

He went of to school that day and then that night I took him on a little birthday date. He was growing out of all of this church clothes, so I took him shopping for some new church clothes.
Then dinner at Pizza Pie Cafe

...and a movie.  We started these one-on-one dates a few years ago and I really do love being able to get that time with him. Makes my heart SUPER happy!
That Sunday he celebrated with my side of the family. That same day he gave a talk in Primary and nailed it. I helped him put an outline together for his talk, but he pretty much wrote the whole thing himself. I wish I could have recorded it because he looks and acts like a young missionary up there. So confident and full of the Light of Christ!

Ryker got the hoverboard he's been asking for since before Christmas. He got right on it and made it look easy. Still can't believe he's getting so grown up.

Feb 9

I have made a new friend over the past couple of years. Jenny Noall is in our ward and we have grown closer and closer. Which it's funny because we have so many things NOT in common. But yet we find ourselves enjoying being together. We have 3 kids all about the same ages and a love for the gospel. She's been one of those friends that I can go on a long walk with and we can talk about anything. Someone who I can share my spiritual experiences with and my bad moments.

 Feb 14- Valentine's Day

Jesse wrote me a cute candy-gram that made me smile. It reads...

"Ash, Even though I may drive you BANANAS and sometimes you want to PUNCH me, because I don't call you BABY without SNICKER, I love you so EXTRA LONG. You bring me MOUNDS of JOY. I was a big SMARTIE and got a big PAYDAY when I snagged you because you are totally MINT! Happy Valentine's Day! Love you! Sorry you can eat any of this. -Jesse"

He's seriously the best

The boys both worked really hard on their Valentines Boxes. I was very proud of their creativity by making them all by themselves and coming up with the ideas. Cyrus built a soccer field and Ryker created an under the sea box.
That night I surprised the 4 "valentines" in my life to a candle lit dinner.

I served Sparkling Apple Cider to start, Artichokes for an appetizer, Pan seared Sirlion and Fillet with Roasted Butternut squash for the main course, and finished off with oce cream in a heart shape.
We started as soon as Jesse got home from acadamy. So as soon as he came in I had it dark with soft music playing. After we were done eating we took turns telling each other what we loved about each other. I remember my heart feeling so full as I sat there really feeling the joy of that moment. The love was so thick and I felt so grateful for these boys.

I think this was my favorite Valentines Day so far and would like to make it a traditional thing.
 Feb 19-
I thankfully have an Instagram account that I'm able to collect some of my thoughts and feelings about life. That day I wrote this...
"It was a year ago today that I found out my best friend Harmoni received her new calling to serve on the other side of the veil. She has left a continual impression on my heart ever since."

"I still wear my Harmoni necklace everyday (it'll probably rust off me before I ever take it off). I still exercise with the same passion that she awoke in me 8 years ago (we exercised together every day for many years). I go to the temple every week, just like she did and loved."

"I love my Savior like she does.
I love my family like she does.
She will forever be in my heart!
And I still have those moments that I bawl my eyes out because I just miss her so much! I often imagine what it'll be like when we meet again and oh she better be ready for the biggest hug ever! Love you Harm!
I AM FOREER HARMSTRONG!"
I went to her grave to visit.
And bring her a little Valentines Love!
And I just cried and cried.
 Feb 22-

Fynn is always doing the funniest things.  On this particular day I was laughing at him after telling him he couldn't play on the kindle fire. I found him in his room ...all quiet like... on the book shelf...playing with the kindle.  Sneaky little dude.
Looking back on this photo and I remember it being that last time I went to the temple for several months. I had established a weekly habit of going to the temple, and about the end of Feb when Jesse's academy got more and more intense for him. Which in reality got more and more intense for me at home with the boys.

I will say that I had to find peace within the phrase "A time and a season for all things". Because I just fell into the season of not being able to go to the temple as often as I was before. And that's ok. My focus was on taking care of Jesse!

With that said I wanna quote Boyd K Packer "At the temple the dust of distraction seems to settle out, the fog and the haze seem to lift, and we can 'see' things that we were not able to see before and find a way through our troubles that we had not previously known."

There is something so renewing that comes from stepping away from the world and into the House of God. I leave feeling happy and peaceful. Calm, steadfast... and clear in my realm.

Welp, I blinked.

Honestly.

I committed at the beginning of this year that I wouldn't allow myself to fall behind on the blog again. I didn't love trying to catch up the whole year all the last week of December in 2018 and here I am going to have to do it again.

The last time I was on here, I talked about SLC Recruit Academy just barely starting. I mentioned that it seems like it could be challenging for us. Welp, it was. And I cannot wrap my mind around the fact that 10 1/2 months has gone by. Where the heck did it go?

I'll say this... Every single day of my life  i pretty much have things so tightly scheduled. From the time I wake up at 5 am to go to the gym, get boys off to school, walk the dog (oh ya, that's new, we got a dog), go to work, or work on the house cleaning, or go to Young Womens, take boys to soccer and football practices, plan and execute FHE, YW Lessons or scripture study, even  getting a shower in for the day feels like a chore.  So it's not like I have been idol in my days. And even when I do get a free moment, I feel extremely exhausted that there is nothing in me besides watch a mindless show or pass out on the couch.

So here I am on Winter Break with my boys. We just survived a crazy busy Christmas Day yesterday and I am commited to get this year updated over the next few days.

New Chapter for our Family

Back in the beginning of November Jesse got an email from Salt Lake City Fire Department that they were looking to lateral hire 8 paramedics. He asked me what I thought and I told him that he should go for it and if it was meant to be the Lord would bless him and and us with it to work out.

Last year SLCFD did the same thing and Jesse actually applied but found out from the beginning that he didn't qualify. When he really did. But he accidentally filled out his dates wrong on his resume and they wouldn't allow him to continue on with the hiring process. He was totally bummed. Especially after a couple of guys from Ogden got hired. He was a little jelly. Over the next year he kept hearing from Patrick how awesome SLCFD was. Jesse was happy for him but also sad that he missed his chance.

So when this second chance came around he jumped on it.

The first step was to submit his resume... with accurate dates and qualifications.

Second Step was the written test. 27 medics showed up for this. 20 would be moving onto the next step. Jesse passed with 92% and was then ready to move onto the panel interview. After the interview he would be scored and then the combined score of the written test and interview score will then give him a rank. And they were looking to hire 8 medics. So ideally he would want to be in the top 8 to have a better chance at getting the Chief interview.

They gave him several weeks to prepare for the panel interview. During that time he practiced over and over again. Patrick works for SLCFD now, but he and Jesse used to work together in Ogden. They became really close. Patrick was hired on last year in the Lateral Hire that Jesse had applied for and didn't make it. So now we are here a year later, Patrick has been a great help to Jesse. He gave him a good idea on what kind of questions to prepare himself for. Things that they are looking for and how to "sell" himself in a dignified way.

During this prep time he was also filling out a novel of background check paperwork and go through a background check interview.

This was all going on too while he was planning the Ogden Firefighter Christmas Party. Kinda stressful for him. Not to mention that we both were going through a tough time a a couple. The previous year had been really tough on us and we weren't in a healthy and stable place with each other. Not like we normally are together. I think just the combination of the house remodel, trying to get a new job and the stresses of the old job and....juggling the boys, callings and emotions seemed to be alot all at once for us.

Anyway, after his panel interview he had to wait a couple of days to find out his rank. I remember him telling me after the interview that he didn't feel like he did that great. And he was worried that he would be ranked high enough to get an interview.

Well, guess what? Jesse found out that he ranked NUMBER TWO!!!!

When he forwarded me the email that he got I was at work and I couldn't contain my excitement about it. We both were at work so I called him as soon as I could to scream with so much excitement at him. He still couldn't believe that he ranked that high. There were 5 or 6 guys from Ogden that were also applying and he was the highest ranked the highest out of all of them. Gosh I was so proud. At the same time,  I wasn't surprised.

He then had a week or two to prepare for the Chief interview.  I remember him calling me after it was over and I asked him how it went and he said "I nailed it!". Hearing him say that was a first. Usually he's very reserved and not sure of how it really went. But then he always scores well. So when I hear him say that he did a great job I knew that he did a REALLY great job.

Right before Christmas is when he found out that he got the job officially.

But before he could officially start he is required to go through The SLC Recruit Academy.  15 weeks. Monday thru Thursday. 7am to 6pm. Kick your butt training and schooling. So yes he will be sleeping in the same bed as me for 105 straight nights....but he'll be put through a serious stressful time over the course of that 15 weeks. Military level kind of recruit camp.

So far we have 1 week down and it does seem that this is going to be a challenge.
I've committed to helping him in anyway that I can. He comes home from a long sweaty and stressful day and is expected to study for the next day. So when he comes home I will not expect anything from him except to study. I do remember 2 weeks before we started the academy they had a 2 hr orientation preparing the recruits and the spouses on what to expect. And they did say that it was going to be really hard on the spouse. And I can see how it could be and probably will be. I want to be the best I can be for him while he's going to be going through this. If it's packing his lunch every morning, or helping him study or even just keep the boys out of his hair. I want to be there for him. That's my goal throughout this. I want it to bring us together and not divide us.
